A women-friendly West Village townhouse with a history of successful female owners and renters — including multiple Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep, the late socialite Libet Johnson, divorcée Diandra Douglas and, most recently, frozen food entrepreneur Elisabeth de Kergorlay — has sold for $17.5 million, according to property records.
That’s far less than the $35 million that Belgian-born de Kergorlay, founder of frozen food line Babeth’s Feast, first listed the 19th-century home for back in 2016.
Built in 1845, the brick Greek Revival townhouse at 19 W. 12th St. comes with what has been called “one of the most opulent bathrooms in New York.”
The 25-foot-wide, five-story home boasts its own elevator, 6,750 square feet, five bedrooms, along with a lacquer red chef’s kitchen, a landscaped garden and a planted roof deck.
“This is a good 25-footer on the West Village’s Gold Coast. There’s not that many,” a real estate insider said.
Details include 12-foot ceilings, mahogany pocket doors, crown moldings, floor-to-ceiling windows, six fireplaces and a formal dining room.
But the pièce de résistance is the main bedroom on the fifth floor. It comes with a fireplace, along with a 25-foot-wide skylight, large walk-in closets, a dressing room — and a sprawling 450-square-foot marble bathroom that is bigger than many New Yorkers’ shared apartments.
Think Italian gold Calacatta marble from Carrara, Italy — so heavy that the floors had to be reinforced to install it.
The bathroom features its own sitting area, with a dreamy 18th-century daybed, which was a de Kergorlay family heirloom now clad in terrycloth. There’s also a fireplace, cast-iron tub, freestanding shower and red Murano glass stones for a touch of color.
Streep bought the home for $2.1 million back in 1995 and sold it 10 years later, to Libet Johnson, the Johnson & Johnson heiress, for $9.1 million.
Johnson then rented the townhouse to Diandra Douglas, Hollywood star Michael Douglas’s first wife; de Kergorlay then bought it for $13.5 million in 2008.
