MoMA curator William Rubin’s ‘masterpiece’ home asks $4.8M

Real Estate

A gallery-style modernist home in Pound Ridge, NY, once home to late MoMA curator William Rubin and his wife, curator/art historian Phyllis Hattis, is back on the market for $4.85 million — down from its 2019 asking price of $6.5 million.

Geometrically shaped, it was designed by the late architect Vuko Tashkovich, a protégé of I. M. Pei, with input from Rubin and Hattis — to become a canvas for their serious art collection.

Rubin is credited with beefing up the storied museum’s painting and sculpture collection in the 1970s and 1980s.

Tashkovich designed 57 homes in his lifetime, including 28 in Pound Ridge. This 9,358-square-foot home, at 38 Mallard Lake Road, was built in 1995. It features four bedrooms, and 6½ bathrooms.

The first-floor main bedroom suite opens to a 50-foot indoor pool, and a great room with two stories of glass facing Mallard Lake.

The second floor boasts guest suites with balconies, an office, library and meeting room. Striking details throughout the home feature window walls, barrel-vaulted ceilings, a hand-cut stone fireplace and multiple terraces.

The property, which sits on 3.43 acres, features gardens, a dock and 300 feet of waterfront.

The listing broker is David Turner of Houlihan Lawrence.
